The Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology (BCMP) department at Harvard Medical School asked me to design a long sleeve T shirt for their fall retreat in 2017.
I needed to create something that represented the department and was universal enough for every member of the department to wear from recent college graduates to long-term employees.
Before sketching anything, I began by listing things associated with chemistry, biology, and science in general, as well as fall-related terms. This helped me expand on concepts and avoid being stuck on just one idea.
I then took each concept and created sketches based on each of them. Some stood out as concepts to move forward with and others I left at the sketching phase.
Below are the four most effective ideas that I decided to move forward with in Illustrator. I was able to see what they look like on a shirt before adding any color to them. I shared these with the department and got their feedback. They preferred the last concept, so I turned that into the final design.
The final design is shown below. I used the Harvard Medical School logo in white for the front of the shirt, and used a two-color approach (light blue and white) for the back. These were then sent to the shop for printing and distributed to the BCMP department before the Fall Retreat.
